In this modern and computer obsessed era our every waking moment has become dominated by technology our every second encompassed in a huge number of gadgets and gizmos designed to help make our lives easier and in some way “better”. Technology is even starting to take over all aspects of the business world, the world of marketing and advertising being altered beyond recognition by the huge increase of technologies such as the internet and the ever increasing use mobile internet. This has lead to a considerable rise in the use of the online internet space to market companies. It is this rise in the use of technology that has lead to a rise in, what is known as, Online Marketing, leaving some (although, admittedly not many) marketing processes obsolete, forcing business owners to alter their advertising techniques. Online Marketing is the specific use of the online services (internet, e-mail etc.) to promote a particular product or service, enabling companies to reach more and more people with more ease than usual marketing techniques. It this ease of marketing that makes online marketing very fashionable and is one of the many pluses of marketing in the online world instead of the traditional processes.

One of the ways of using the online market for advertising is via Search Engine Placement. This is the use of search engines and keywords to give greater visibility of organisations to the general public. But what is a search engine? The sorts of search engines used in online marketing are specifically web based search engines and can be described as;

A web search engine is a tool built to search for information on the internet. The search results are normally delivered in a list of results and are typically called hits. The information may be made up of web pages, images, information and other sorts of files.

It is via search engines that website optimisation can happen though techniques such as search engine placement. Specifically this is the inclusion of keywords on the home page of a website in relation to the words searched most on that particular search engine (in relation to the type of organisation being advertised). The website address is then added to the search engine as well as these keywords and as a result when searched for by the user these keywords will stand out and will place the website higher in the results list.

The issues with search engine placement is that without the best knowledge of specific keywords and their placement, attempting search engine placement on your own may not be very fertile. This is due to the very specific nature of the search criteria typed in by the general public [those using the search engines]. A way round this predicament is by the employment of an Search Engine Optimisation Company. This is a company that through the use of search engine placement (as shown above) will help with the optimisation of your website. SEO stands for search engine optimisation and through the professional knowledge of how search engines work and how best to position specific keywords on websites they are able to help make websites more obvious to the general public. It is due to this why the employment of an SEO Company is prudent.

Having reviewed the facts it is time to revisit the question – is it worth it? In many respects it is worth it and although there will be a cost (through the employment of an SEO Company) in the technological age it would be costly to your business not to use online marketing.
